Diary [manuscript], 1840-1891.

Diary and commonplace book, 1840-1863, of John H. Ransdell, containing reflections, 1842, on philosophy, love, U.S. relations with Great Britain, and money; recipes, n.d., for home remedies and household mixtures; accounts, 1855-1856, for household goods; poetry, n.d.; and memoranda, 1855-1863, regarding the management of his plantation, especially the planting and harvesting of corn. There is also an extensive account, May 1863, of the arrival of Union troops at Ransdell's plantation, describing army requisitions and the effect of the troops' arrival on the plantation slaves; and a certificate, 1891, for membership in St. Joseph's Union, New York, N.Y.

John H. Ransdell was a planter of Elmwood Plantation in Alexandria, Rapides Parish, Louisiana. He and his wife, Amanda THickman, had nine children. One of their sons, Joseph E.
